The zig-zag allows the stitch to stretch with the fabric, so it doesn't break when you try to get your newly reconstructed t-shirt on or off. If you plan to be sewing a lot with stretch and knit fabrics, you might want to consider investing in a serger or a overlock machine to finnish your seams. A serger is a special sewing machine that uses 3, 4, or 5 threads. It trims off the seam allowance and sews "around" the seam, locking the edges to prevent rolling and fraying. A serger is very well suited to sewing stretch fabrics because it's stitch allows for a lot more stretch than even a zig-zag stitch. but this video just shows how to finnish a seam without a serger. :-)

This project took me about an hour. Written Directions: You will need: - pencil, eraser - drafting paper - sewing needle - red thread - red satin fabric (half a meter for two pillows) - pins - scissors/rotary tools - seam ripper (just in case, optional) - marking tool - measuring tool - stuffing (I got mine at Walmart) 1. Draw out the heart shape that you'd like. Add your preferred seam allowance with a measuring tool. Make the heart even by drawing and cutting on a fold. 2. Once cut, in your heart pattern on your material well, with the grain line of the material going vertically on the heart. Cut out two pieces. (If you're not using a sewing machine, skip to step 4) 3. Surge or zig-zag stitch the edges of each heart. 4. Pin the two pieces together, right sides together. 5. Use your marking tool to mark about 5in/13cm from the tip of the heart to either side. 6. With the seam allowance you decided to use, stitch around the heart, leaving the gap that you marked open. (If you are hand sewing, you should mark your seam allowance so that you know where to sew. Keep the stitches small and close together.) 7. Clip the seam allowance along the curves of the heart and cut off excess fabric at the tip of the heart before turning it right side out. 8. Iron the edges. 9. Stuff your pillow. 10. Hand sew the gap closed.

How to Clean Your Singer Featherweight 221 Sewing Machine

You should clean your Singer Featherweight 221 at least once a year, and sometimes even after an extended period (several weeks) of continuous sewing.

Like any machine that needs to be cleaned and oiled, it's a good idea to work over a layer of newspapers in order to minimize any additional mess. Other items you'll need are a screwdriver, WD-40 lubricant, baby oil, sewing machine oil, lint free cotton fabric, Q-tips or toothpicks, an old small head toothbrush, and possibly 0000 fine steel wool and kerosene. Do not use alcohol (or Lestoil) to clean your Featherweight as it will dissolve the finish and the machines decals.

Start by scraping off all visible grease with a lint free cotton fabric. If you have not cleaned your Featherweight in some time, or you just purchased one and this is its first cleaning in a while, you may need to dissolve some grease that has hardened. To do this pour a little kerosene (or WD-40) onto the solidified grease and allow it to soften. Very stubborn, hardened grease may need to be soaked overnight in which case you should tip your Featherweight so that the solid material sits on a cloth soaked with kerosene (naturally this should be done in a well ventilated area, and away from open flames). Once all the old grease is removed, reapply approved sewing machine oil only. Refer to your owner's manual for the appropriate oiling locations.

If you notice bits of grease or grime accumulating around the Singer Featherweight decal, or lettering, these can be easily removed with a Q-tip or toothpick covered with a small section of your lint free cotton. Stubborn bits can be removed by first soaking the end of the Q-tip with WD-40 or kerosene.

Remove the needle plate (throat plate) and remove any thread that may be wound around the shaft. Also clean out any accumulated lint inside the cover and under the thread spindle with a toothbrush.

If you are mechanically inclined, it's not a bad idea to give your Featherweight 221 a very thorough internal cleaning as well. This means having to remove pretty much every mechanical component that can be unscrewed including the face plate, presser foot, bobbin cover and flywheel, but not the motor. It's always a good idea to keep the components together (and labeled if necessary) so you know how to put it all back together again. All components should be thoroughly sprayed/soaked with WD-40 and wiped clean. The WD-40 will actually clean, lubricate, and help to protect the metal components.

Remember, although you can wipe down the motor housing, do not lubricate the motor. Electric motors require very little lubricant, and it is very easy to damage the motor by over lubricating it.

After you wipe down the motor, take a moment to check the belt tension. There should only be ½ to ¾ of an inch of play in the belt. Also, if the belt is worn, replace it. This is done by loosening the screw directly under the belt at the base of the machine, almost straight back from the light switch. Loosen the screw just enough so that the motor slides (do not remove the screw) and the belt is able to be removed. Place the new belt on, slide the motor back into position and retighten the screw. Make sure you have the proper belt tension. If the belt is too tight you will strain the motor. If the belt is too loose, you will lose power. To get the best performance out of your machine, take your time and make sure you have the proper belt tension.

If you notice any light surface rust (not deeply pitted) on the metal parts of your machine, this can also be fairly easily removed. Rub the rusted section gently with 0000 fine steel wool. Stubborn spots can be helped off by first spraying the steel wool with WD-40 or dabbing with kerosene. Do not use the steel wool to remove any dirt, grease or debris from the machine surface since it will leave scratch marks on the lacquer finish.

Once you've finished cleaning your Singer Featherweight 221, make sure all of the screws have been tightened. Any loose screws can cause grinding or rattling noises and in extreme cases can possibly damage you machine, if it causes a jam.

Finally, put a little dab of baby oil onto a soft lint free cotton fabric and rub it all over the outside of the machine body. Wipe off any excess. Not only will this give the unit a nice shine, but the oil will help to preserve the varnish finish.

Regular cleaning of your Singer Featherweight 221 sewing machine will keep it running smoothly for years.

The Singer 1748 sewing machine has attractive red detail so it's a very nice looking machine but its real charm comes from the unique combination of built-in stretch stitches. This sewing machine also has adjustable presser foot pressure which is helpful when working with different fabric thicknesses and can be hard to find on sewing machines under $200.

Singer 1748 Stitch Patterns
There are 32 built in stitches that cover different types of fabric and different types of sewing but the bulk are a unique set of decorative stretch and over-edge stitches that make for extra strong seams. These stitches can be used for applique, quilting, stippling, and certainly for garment construction.

A stitch reference guide is printed on the front of the machine so you can quickly find the pattern you want and a dial on the side is used to scroll through those available patterns. The selected stitch pattern appears in a small window on the front of the machine. Two dials on the front control stitch width and stitch length - both of which are adjustable to 5mm.

This set of stitches includes a four-step, bartack style buttonhole. Not as quick as a one-step, but still very functional and easy enough for beginners to use.

Singer 1748 Presser Feet
This sewing machine comes with four snap-on style, low shank presser feet: All Purpose foot, Zipper foot, Buttonhole foot, and the Button Sewing foot which can be used to attach two and four-hole buttons.

The presser foot lever has 3 height settings including the normal down position used during sewing, the up position used to insert or remove fabric, and an extra high up for inserting and removing thicker fabrics.

Singer 1748 Features
This electric sewing machine offers a basic set of sewing features. There is an automatic needle threader, adjustable top thread tension, a handy reverse lever for reverse sewing, and a manual thread cutter at the back of the machine. It's not high on automation but it is a nice, sturdy basic sewing machine that's easy to operate.

You can remove the flat bed for free-arm sewing and a work lamp provides adequate lighting over the needle plate.

The bobbin winder is not automatic and you do have to draw up the bottom threads yourself to start sewing. The bobbin is also front-loading, not top-loading, which some people find more difficult to work with while others prefer this traditional bobbin set up.

Singer 1748 Accessories
Included are a number of sewing accessories that store in the flat bed attachment: L-shaped screwdriver, seam ripper and brush, oil bottle, extra needles, extra bobbins, a seam guide, darning plate, spool holder, and a second spool pin.

When you first start sewing, it can seem like there are too many things you need to know. Whether you have a project in mind already or if you just want to learn to sew, it is hard to make a decision about what sort of sewing machine to buy. So, here are some things to help you make that decision.

Firstly, there are lots of things to consider when shopping for a sewing machine, but just a few of them are really important. The first thing you'll discover is that machines come in two categories: mechanical and computerized. Despite the name, mechanical models are electric and many have good features like a wide variety of stitches. However, they generally require you to control the variables available by hand and tend to cost less. Computerized machines allow you to choose your selections using a simple touch screen and control most functions through computer chips. Many computerized machines also have LED screens that display your settings and usually offer more features and stitch flexibility.

Mechanical Sewing Machines

Why Did My Sewing Machine Needle Break?

From time to time we all make mistakes in sewing. Yes even experienced sewers can make these same mistakes. So whether you are just learning to sew, or have been sewing for years take the extra time needed before starting a new project to be sure you don't damage your machine or injure yourself with a broken needle. It can be frustrating and costly to continually break needles during your sewing.

Breaking needles is not only costly, but is definitely something you want to avoid. When a needle breaks it can fall into the bottom portion of the machine, get lodged in the bobbin case or some place else you can't see. If you have trouble threading a needle, just imagine how hard it would be to find that tiny tip that broke off? When the tips fall into your machine it could damage your sewing machine and this can lead to costly repair bills. If that is your only sewing machine, that means waiting weeks to get it back! Another danger with broken needles is the tips of the needles can fly out towards your face, and the last thing you want is a sewing machine needle flying towards your face!

Here are the most common reasons for breaking needles. A few extra steps to double check your setup before you start sewing can save you time, pain and avoid costly repair bills!

Your needle was of poor quality. Use good quality, polished steel needles

You are pulling the fabric through the machine. When you pull the fabric through the machine it puts stress on the need and bends it out of place.

The needle is installed incorrectly. Check your manual to be sure it is inserted properly.

The needle may be to delicate for the fabric your working with. Use heavy-gauge needles for sewing heavier fabric like denim or leather.

You may have hit a pin. If possible, don't sew over pins. Pin so that they don't pass through the presser foot or remove them as you approach the presser foot, and before they actually go under the presser foot.

The presser foot is loose. This will cause the needle to hit the foot and bend. There should be a screw with which you can tighten the foot.

The needle plate is loose. Make sure it is secured tightly and in the correct place for the needle to pass through.

You have a single-hole-plate on the machine, and are using a decorative stitch like zigzag or some other stitch that is wider, and you are hitting the plate. Change to a plate that is meant for wider stitches and therefore has a wider hole.

For many, the antique Singer sewing machine value is mostly, or partially, sentimental. Typically, the machine they own belonged to a family member and was passed down through the generations as an heirloom piece. This does not, however, mean that antique Singer machine value lies purely in the sentimental, or in the family tree. Many collectors seek out antique Singer sewing machines for their rarity, for their beauty and for the sheer craftsmanship that went into their creation.

Singer started to manufacture sewing machines back in 1851, later on in 1856, they offered the first home-use model, which was cost prohibitive to most consumers at the time. Most people who purchased a Singer model in the 1850s did so on a payment plan, much the same as a credit card today.

These earlier models were stand mounted and featured one pedal while later models featured lock-stitch shuttles (patented by Singer in 1859) and two pedals. The machine that started a home-sewn revolution was so popular, it even had its own "action figures"-toy and miniature sewing machines made of cast iron.

Over the next several decades, Singer focused on creating more affordable models for home-use through mass production, leaving the original beauties behind. In the early 1900s, cabinet enclosures and even flip-top sewing machine tables were made, followed by various changes that lead to today's plastic models.

The original models from the mid to late 1800s may be valued in the high thousands depending on their condition, model, original extras, the casing and of course, the market as well as the pool of potential buyers. While condition is certainly a factor, antique Singer sewing machine value is based more on the year of production and the type of machine.

Factors that may be considered in determining the value of your antique Singer sewing machine include decoration on the machine and whether it is older, with a one pedal treadle or two pedal treadles. In addition, if the machine is in working condition with all of the original parts, the value will rise substantially. Elna introduced many models in sewing machines. Each model was unique with special feature of its own. I would like to share my knowledge on a few of these models from Elna sewing machines. Elna sewing machines vary from mechanical type of machines to electronic type of machines and to very highly computerized models.

The first introduced portable model was Elna 1, in the year 1940's. This model was an electronic one and the cover could be turned into a table for the sewing machine. This model created a revolution in the way sewing machines were designed. A model called Supermatic was introduced in the 1950's which had the feature of completely automatic stitching possible by the machine. The next famous model was called as Lotus which was introduced in the 1960's. Lotus had the design with reduced weight and it was easy to handle. The sewing machine accessories box was provisioned over the top of the sewing machine in the model Lotus.

In the year 1970's Elna Stella was introduced. This model had all the preferred features from the previous models as well as electronic way of sewing was introduced in Elna Stella. In the year of 1980's, Carina another new model was introduced by Elna sewing machines. This model made over lock stitches possible on all kind of fabrics for sewing. In the same decade, Elna 5000 a computerized way of sewing was introduced. This model had computer memory for sewing. In the following years, ElnaLock a model with portable thread system was introduced with dual needle capability in the machine. In the year of 1990's, Elna Diva was introduced. This model can do more embroideries and alphabets in the fabrics. In the year of 2000's, Elna Xquisit was introduced which was a fully automated computerized sewing machine. This model could do embroidery and automatic spooling to the needle in the machine.

Elna sewing machines adapted continuous improvement in the process of sewing machine design. The models they introduced are all with new and unique features with modern technologies incorporated.

I remember in those days during my childhood, my mother was desperate to buy one of the models of Elna sewing machines for her tailoring needs. The Make It Sew sewing machine is a miniature sized 2 speed with top and bottom thread stitching, uses bobbins. It can run on 4 AA batteries or electric, and has a hand on/off switch or foot pedal option. The foot pedal creates more variable speed control for turning, corners, or designs. It does a basic single stitch only. I bought this machine at a thrift store in its original box and with all the accessories included, as shown in the picture. I was able to get the machine running in a very short time and make some basic practice stitching with it, but the problem I believe is with the instruction manual which is written in poorly translated chinese and was not too helpful. I had a vintage book here called Readers Digest Complete Guide To Sewing which had the information in it to help me get the machine working, thankfully. So I will be using this small machine to learn on since I have minimal experience with actual sewing machines. I feel that it is a nice item and will enjoy using it. 1. Cloth Napkins: everyone is going 'green' these days, and using cloth napkins eliminates paper waste in landfills. Cotton fabric or a cotton blend works best for napkins.

2. Quilted Placemat: another 'green' project is reversible quilted placemats. Making quilted reversible cloth placemats is an eco-friendly way to bring customized decor to your dinner table. Whether a cotton or cotton blend, there is a near endless variety of fabric patterns and colors to choose from to match any decor.

3. Apron: sticking with the food/kitchen theme, sewing aprons is an easy project that can be used for more than just cooking. Aprons with pockets are great when you're sewing, to hold tape measurers and other tools used while sewing - or can be worn while cleaning to protect your clothing. Aprons can also be made more like smocks and used during painting or other messy craft projects.

4. T-shirt Dress: a quick and easy dress using a purchased t-shirt and material to make the skirt. Great for girls of all ages. As t-shirts come in a huge variety of colors, best to start with the skirt fabric and select a coordinating t-shirt color. The saddest day in my life was the day we took Nans to the nursing home.

It was a week later when the family gathered at 514 Church street where my grandmother lived for 45 years. Our mission, remove furniture, repair and paint walls so we can rent or sell the house.

We were informed by uncle Bill that if we wanted anything take it. But, aunts and uncles had first right if approval. It was important to me to find something to remember Nana by. I waited my turn with tears in my eyes and finally picked up several small items.

Two days later, for a reason I did not understand, my father came by my home with an old sewing machine. One I had seen, but shown no interest in, at Nana's home. I opened the drawers of the oak cabinet and discovered that I was the proud owner of a 1910 Singer sewing machine. I know this because I found the original manual.

I had absolutely no interest in sewing I saw no need to make something I could buy at the Mall. Besides, why go to the trouble of making a dress that would be out of style next season.

It took two months to find a job for my new Singer. It was a simple hemming job that took me two hours to complete. What an enjoyable experience it was.

and the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. I was hooked.

My first project was the little black dress, a 1920s design by Coco Chanel.

Recently my maid of honor used her die cut machine to make adorable bird-themed cards for my bridal shower (thank you again, Kristin!) Vintage sewing machines are very popular with crafty people and collectors. This is because the machines tend to be beautiful, but also because they were made so well that they still work fantastically. It is also because a vintage sewing machine is a beautiful addition to a room's decor. Sewing machines first begun being mass produced in the 1850's.

The first sewing machines were not electric! There wasn't widespread electricity until the very late 1890's-early 1900's. The machines were run by either foot pedals, or a hand cranked wheel. They were both the same concept as machines use today. The foot pedals would turn the wheel which made the needle go up and down. The hand crank worked the same way. Although more difficult to use, because one hand was always preoccupied, the hand crank was preferred by many people because it was smaller.

These machines frequently came with a cabinet or case. It would have drawers to store notions and the manual in. They also would serve as a table. This provided a place to keep the sewing machine as well as an attractive decorative piece.

Many of these machines are beautifully decorated. They are painted or have metalwork on them in shapes of flowers or victorian motifs. The cabinets were made of hardwoods, many of which were carved with similar patterns to the machines.

Although many of these machines are still highly available, due to mass production and long life, many are not worth quite as much as you would think. Sew Your Own Curtains and Learn Insider Tips Whilst Getting Top Quality Instruction At The Same Time

When you're looking at those house interior magazines and admiring the beautiful window dressings do you find yourself thinking 'wouldn't it be great if I could have something like that at my windows'.

Then you tell yourself not to be silly, they are way too expensive. But have you ever considered that maybe you could make your own? Making your own curtains, or drapes, as they're sometimes called can seem like a very daunting prospect, but with practice you really can do it. With a little practice stitching straight lines on a sewing machine can become second nature to anyone. And it's not just plain curtains, you can create lined, interlined, thermal or insulated, they are all within the reach of the beginner. Other accessories include tiebacks, curtain headings and valances of differing styles such as pencil pleat, goblet pleat and pinch pleat.

Now that you're thinking that it might just be possible what do you need to make it happen? The first thing is somewhere to make them, a spare room is ideal, or perhaps a converted garage or basement. You can erect a simple table and leave it up (you're bound to have friends ask you to make theirs!), and the lighter and airier the room the better. If it's on the ground floor you won't have to lug great rolls of fabric up or down the stairs. It needs to be at least 8ft x 16ft, or maybe a little less in length if you have somewhere to tuck your sewing machine.

Also make sure it has decent lighting, I use a strip light as bright as daylight. The biggest piece of equipment you'll need is a suitable table and a sewing machine. My table is 8ft x 4ft, the biggest sheet of wood available, and even then it could be bigger, perhaps an extra couple of feet both ways, this is easily achieved by having a couple of drop-down hinged extensions. Another option if you don't have a spare room is to get by with a collapsible table which you could put up as required. One of the easiest designs I've seen is a flat board and a couple of builder's trestles to rest it on, but this isn't really ideal.

The dining room table is probably the worst choice, although it's big and flat you can't stick pins into it and it certainly isn't big enough to measure your fabric on. If you have no choice measure your fabric out on the floor, you can even make your curtains on the floor but oh, your poor back and knees! Your table needs to be covered in curtain interlining and topped off with curtain lining, this gives a firm but soft surface. I have two sewing machines, one small commercial machine which is perfectly capable of handling most fabrics but will struggle with thicker fabrics, and an industrial machine. An industrial machine can be bought pre-owned if necessary, they really are built to last. Other smaller items are a steam iron, cottons, needles and glass-headed pins and a tape and ruler. A weight, or clamps, are also useful.

If you have any experience with fabrics, either mending your spouse's clothing or perhaps even making clothing, then it's quite easy to build on that experience. A good source of information can be found in books or the internet, some resources, of course, go into more detail than others, more help on a personal level can be found on the internet. If you've never sat behind a sewing machine though don't worry, curtains are straight lines after all! A certain amount of dexterity can be useful as there is some hand-stitching involved in the better quality curtains.

If you don't have a lot of experience with a sewing machine then it's a good idea to practice runs on a piece of fabric which you've drawn straight lines on. This will help you to gain experience as well as confidence. Probably your best skill is going to be patience and the ability to follow instructions. With the variety of sewing machines available, making a decision of which sewing machine to purchase is much more complex than it was way back when.....

Today's quilters are presented with some interesting and fun options that can make their quilting more interesting and relaxing.

Many of the more popular brands, including Singer, Simplicity, Janome, Brother, White and Necci sewing machines feature an LCD display, dial-a-stitch selector, automatic needle threader, convertible free arm, extension table, electronic speed control, drop in bobbin, and computerized stitch selection, to name just a few. These machines sew not only straight stitches, but zig zag, button hole, and fancy embroidery stitches.

Several sewing machine companies cater to the quilting market by including speed adjustments to make machine quilting easier. The White 1740 Quilter's Machine has an extra wide extension bed to support your work, and reduce pulling and stretching. The Simplicity American Quilter sewing machine features a convertible free-arm and snap-on presser foot. All of that and they are lightweight, too - so you can easily transport your machine to your quilting class.

In addition to regular sewing machines, there are sergers and longarm quilting machines to consider.

Prices for sewing machines range from around $100 up to, well, in the thousands.

All of these choices are wonderful, yet how to decide.

Before making your purchase, you should decide how you will use your machine, and whether you might want more than one machine. Those decisions can be made within the context of your budget and lifestyle, in addition to your commitment to quilting and the type of quilting you will be doing.

If you are going to be using your machine only for machine piecing quilt tops, and not doing any machine quilting or fancy stitching, a fairly simple sewing machine will likely serve your needs. If you are going to purchase only one machine and are planning to take it to quilting classes with you, weight and bulk may be a consideration. In addition, it may be important for the machine to come with a carrying case; and possibly space in the carrying case for some sewing supplies.

If you are planning to machine piece your quilt tops and machine quilt the completed project, a heavier duty machine with the power to glide through multiple layers of fabric and batting would be a better choice. In addition, you may want to look for a machine that offers a "walking foot," or something similar, or possibly even built into the machine. This feature will feed the quilt top, batting and quilt backing evenly through the machine as the quilt is stitched, reducing puckering and unsightly folds.

Another consideration if you will be doing much machine quilting is to purchase a sewing machine that is ideal for machine piecing, and a separate longarm machine just for machine quilting. In the past, these machines were designed and priced for the professional market. As with many things, the technology has improved, demand has increased, and now longarm quilting machines are more of an option for home quilters.

Once you have decided how you will use your machine and what features are important to you, the next step is to ponder the particular brands available. Price is not always a determination of quality, so a visit to a local sewing machine store - whether it is the community Sew and Vac, a Walmart, Sears, or something else - where you can "test drive" the machines might be the next order of business.

Trying several different brands with different features will give you an idea of what you prefer. A conversation with a sewing machine repair person will give you a hint about brands that need a lot of service and those which last years with just a yearly tune up.

Once you have narrowed it down to a particular brand or two, and know which features are important, the next step is to do some research on price and availability. The internet offers some great choices for saving money - eBay, overstock.com, PriceGrabber.com, etc. While these sources offer good savings, they may not provide a guarantee or the service you may want for your machine. If your local Sew and Vac will service the machine once you have it, the price savings may prove worthwhile.

Used sewing machines may also be a consideration. Some of the older machines are in excellent condition and offer features not found on current machines. Singer Featherweight sewing machines from the 40s and 50s are still popular with quilters. These little machines are like the Energizer Bunny - they just keep going and going. They are lightweight and simple. Some have attachments, many just sew forward and backward and are perfect for machine piecing. Keep them oiled and they will last many lifetimes!

Wouldn't it be nice if the decision were easier, and you could just "call Sears" and order the machine? On the other hand, isn't it fantastic that the quilting days of 75 years ago are behind us and we can now create quilts using technology that encourages our creativity!

The Uses Of Sewing Machine

Sewing machines were invented long back during the first Industrial Revolution. The intention behind the invention of such machines was to decrease the time required in sewing, as before this all the sewing work was done manually. The cloth companies needed to optimize their work and sewing machines was the answer.

Once the first sewing machine was invented, the productivity and the efficiency of the clothing and fabric industries increased vastly. Also, the sewing machines have improved greatly with their speeds increasing manifolds, variations available in stitching styles. The modern sewing machines look and work in a much more mechanized way as compared to the sewing machines which our great grandmothers used. Instead of simple stitching, they embroider, stitch, attach buttons, do pekoe and many more other activities.

The older machines used a single thread chain stitch mechanism. The modern sewing machine uses two threads instead of one and uses what is called lock stitching mechanism. The industrial sewing machines are generally specialized for one type of stitching since they need to be optimized. They are designed in a way that the fabric is able to glide in and out easily, without any hassle of thimbles and needles. The ease reduces the effort required and saves a lot of time.

The problem with the chain stitch was - it was extremely weak and it was possible to pull it apart very easily. With the introduction of machines in the field, people started to think that a better and stronger way of stitching could now be devised which would only be possible through machine usage. Lock stitch was the answer to their questions. In the case of lock stitch, two different threads are interlocked from both the sides of the fabric. It results in a stitch which can be looked as if the fabric is stitched from both ends making it much more strong and durable than the conventional chain stitch.

Thomas Saint was the first person to have a design for sewing machine patented. His machine was designed to work on canvas and leather. A working model of the same was never built. Other designs and patents came along in the future. Walter Hunt was the developer of lock stitch technique.

Other than the basic requirements in the motion of loopers, needles and bobbins, the most important movement is that of the fabric. It is necessary that the fabric moves at the required time (generally continuously) so that the stitches are made at the right position. The motion is also called as `feed`. Typical feed motion include: needle feed, drop feed, puller, walking foot, and manual. Generally, more than one kind of feed is used in a single machine to optimize the working.

A household machine will generally include only the lock stitch mechanism. But the machine can be used in a little different way (generally by moving the needle in different ways which is an included function in the machine); fancy stitches can be made possible. The simplest form of a fancy stitch is zigzag in which the needle just needs to perform an oscillatory motion continuously as the stitching is done normally.

Mechanical configuration can differ vastly in sewing machines. Some of the typical configurations are - cylinder bed, flat bed, off the arm and post bed. All the basic feed mechanism and stitch types are available in all these configurations. However, for industrial purposes the best possible configuration is used for a type of stitch. Like, blind stitch always uses cylinder bed configuration.

The invention of sewing machine was a necessity. And its introduction greatly increased the production and quality of the cloth industry.

By using a layering process with spray bottles you can easily create incredible faux rock painting effects. There is a little more to it than simply spraying paint onto whatever it is you are painting - to get a realistic faux granite finish there are a few key steps to remember:

1) Water down your paints
2) Choose complimentary colors
3) Allow time to dry between layers
4) Always finish with black

If you follow these four steps you are sure to create realistic looking granite colors. Once you have mastered this art of faux rock painting you will be amazed at how realistic you can make a two dimensional surface like a wall or a concrete floor - just think of the 3-D results like making artificial rocks with concrete.

Water Down Your Paints
The type of sprayer you use will depend largely on your budget, but for most people trying their hand at faux granite painting would likely use regular hand held spray bottles like normally used for water. There are available everywhere and relatively cheap. The down side of these sprayers compared to more expensive pressurized models is their inclination to clog or spray in less desirable splotches as opposed to a fine mist which is preferred.

By watering down the water based paints you are using you can get most sprayers to pump them. A mix of 3 parts water to 1 part paint as the minimum is a good starting point for trying your mixture. Practice adjusting the stream of your paint into a bucket to get as fine a mist as possible before painting your subject matter.

Choose Complimentary Colors
To create a realistic looking faux rock pain finish you need to decide which color you want your subject to be overall. This is usually gray, red, light brown and dark brown which are the most common faux rock color choices. If you were to choose light brown as the color for your rock you will need to have at least two or three different shades of brown to use. Since you want a light brown coloured rock you would start with the light brown applying a heavy misting layer to cover at least 80% of the total surface.

Be sure not to have the paint drip or run. You can apply two coats of the same color one after another to avoid the paint running. Once the main base layer has been applied the remaining layers are all painted in a much lighter - misting fashion.

In addition to the light brown, and then a light misting of dark brown, you will want to add two or thee highlighting colors which you will apply sporadically to your subject. These highlighting colors are usually blue, red, yellow, tan, orange, gray and green and are intended to provide inconsistency and depth overall. Not every color goes well together and you must learn and practice to develop a strong feel for color combinations.

Allow Time To Dry Between Layers
By allowing the paint to dry in between layers you can create a much more dynamic finished product where the different colors overlap each other but remain sharp overall. If you add layers when the paint is still wet you will find that the colors will bleed into one another which detracts from the desirable speckled look of a faux granite finish.

Worth noting is that you can use the color bleeding as another artistic tool choosing to blend together colors - especially in the base color stages where you are applying a heavier coat of paint.

Always Finish With Black
If you have one sprayer that works better than all the rest, you should use that sprayer for your black paint. Once you have achieved a color combination that you are happy with and are ready to proceed to the final layer which is a list misting layer of black overall. Some areas you can go slightly heavier on to create an interesting finish, but ultimately the entire surface receives as light of a misting of black as possible.

The goal is to have the black speckles to be as small as possible which will transform a mediocre looking faux granite finish to a magnificent and realistic colour. There are hundreds of different color options and applications for faux granite paint finishes including stamped concrete, artificial rocks, statues, fireplace covers, drywall, decks, stairs, patios and much more.
